Photos from the Hudson's site skyscraper groundbreaking

During a snowy ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 14, 2017 Dan Gilbert, Mike Duggan, and other city officials broke ground on a project that will one day become Detroit's tallest skyscraper.

While the building remains unnamed, it has been known as the "Gilbert's Hudson's site," because the popular J.L. Hudson's department store once stood on the plot.

The groundbreaking was met by a small group of protestors who are opposed to the city giving Gilbert millions of dollars in taxpayer money in order to complete the project, along with three others.
