On Friday, Detroit’s “Golden Girl” Lilith Von Tal hosted a first-anniversary burlesque bash at Planet Ant Theatre in Hamtramck. “Lilith’s Big Ol’ Golden Show” featured acts by Sweet Handsome Two Heart, Tommy Gun, Josephine Shaker, and Veronica Lockhart, and comedy from Johanna Medranda. Both crowd and performers were enthusiastic (and then some) to get down and shake it up. (Tassels and all!) Burlesque wasn’t limited to the stage though, with audience members including Detroit performers such as Eartha Kitten, Marina Casanova, and Ginger Halloway.
More than just the the stage lights, the night felt electric — Lilith herself summed up the show spectacularly with her closing remarks, stating when she started Lilith’s Big Ol’ Golden Show she had the quote from Chicago in mind, “The audience loves me... and I love them [...] And we love each other, and that’s because none of us got enough love in our childhood,” adding, “I feel that’s just not true anymore I don’t think, here tonight we’re sharing something real, something raw; the world’s fucking on fire, and for now, tonight, we can just exist.” And that is what it felt like between audience and performers, enough excitement, smiles, and pasties to go around all evening.
As for future shows, in Lilith’s own words, “I’ll keep bringing back [performers] with backbone and good hearts, anatomically they’ll all absolutely have backbones and good hearts.”
