State regulators announced a recall Tuesday of vape cartridges produced by a Detroit-based cannabis company after discovering the products contain an unauthorized additive that may pose health risks when inhaled.

Exhale Systems Inc. is voluntarily recalling multiple strains of its BLOOM Classic and BLOOM Live vape cartridges because they contain Medium Chain Triglyceride (MCT) oil, which is banned for use in Michigan cannabis vape products.

The affected products include the following strains: Alien Jack, Blue Dream, Cereal Milk, Champagne Kush, Durban Gelato, Face Off OG, Forbidden Fruit, Green Crack, Jack Herer, Maui Wowie, Pineapple Express, Pineapple Sherbert, Rainbow Runtz, Skywalker, White Widow.

Customers who purchased these cartridges after Sept. 1, 2024, are urged to compare the package’s Metrc Tag number with those listed on the CRA website to determine if they have a recalled product.
Consumers with a recalled vape should return it to the dispensary where they purchased it or dispose of it safely, according to the Cannabis Regulatory Agency (CRA).

MCT oil, commonly derived from coconut oil or palm oil, is widely used in food products and oral supplements because of their health benefits when ingested. However it is not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for inhalation. In fact, studies have raised concerns about the potential respiratory risks of inhaling MCT because it can coat the lungs with a substance that may interfere with breathing and lead to serious health problems.

The Cannabis Regulatory Agency announced new testing requirements for MCT last summer, warning the substance “may pose dangers to respiratory health.”

A week ago, the CRA announced the recall of nearly 16,000 Platinum Vape cartridges containing MCT.

Anyone who has experienced adverse reactions after vaping the recalled products are asked to report their symptoms and product use to their health care providers. Consumers are also urged to report any adverse reactions to the CRA by filling out a form or calling 517-284-8599.
