A 3-year-old boy is in critical condition after a shooting on Detroit's east side, police say.
The circumstances surrounding the shooting are not yet clear. Police say it happened around 10 a.m. on the 5900 block of Marcus Street, between Mount Elliot Street and Detroit's border with Hamtramck. The child's parents brought him to the hospital for treatment.
The shooting comes after a bloody April for children in Detroit. Almost exactly a month ago, three children were shot within a three day stretch. One was a 3-year-old girl who was hit by a stray bullet during a broad-daylight shooting at a gas station near the city's University District, who was hit in the head and listed in critical condition immediately after the incident.
A 7-year-old boy had been hit by a stray bullet days earlier while playing in his home on the east side. The bullet hit that child in the neck, and he was also listed in critical condition, but was expected to survive. Separately, a 16-year-old was shot in the leg.
After the first shooting in that spate, Detroit police Chief James Craig convened a press conference where he said, “When a child is shot, it creates a perception that crime is out of control.” He went on in that news conference to tout a modest reduction in violent crime.
