Warm temps force ski resorts across Michigan to delay opening

Metro Detroit commuters may not be complaining about the lack of snow and frigid temperatures so far this December, but the folks who run Michigan's various ski resorts are.

The Free Press reported this morning that ski slopes across the state have had to delay opening this season as forecasts creep into the 40s and 50s again this week.

"Every year we are dealing with some issue or other," Mickey MacWilliams, the executive director of the Michigan Snowsports Industries, told the Freep. "We hope to get the warm out of the way now so that by the day after Christmas, when the ski season really starts, we hope to be up and ready and rocking."

A few of the state's resorts have fired up their snow making machines for weekend crowds, but again, the production of snow requires low temperatures, so it's not sustainable without Mother Nature's help.

"Maybe a snow dance would be good," MacWilliams said.

Update: Ski Brule in Iron River Michigan called to let us know that they are open and have snow(!).
