If you’re going to imbibe in craft cocktails this week, do it for a good cause (other than thirst). June 2-8, Campari and the United States Bartenders Guild are partnering with 15 metro Detroit bars to bring you “Negroni Week”.
Negroni is a Campari-based cocktail that includes gin and vermouth. It can be served straight up or on the rocks and exact recipes vary. The origins of the Negroni cocktail are unknown, but it’s believed to have surfaced around 1920.
During “Negroni Week”, participating bars will donate $1 of the cost of each cocktail to 826 Michigan, a nonprofit that helps students ages 6-18 with their creative writing skills. Rumor (translation: Wikipedia) has it that famed author and playwright Tennessee Williams favored the Negroni cocktail. The bar that raises the most money will receive an additional $10,000 from Campari, to donate to the charity of their choice. If you don’t care for gin or Vermouth, variations of the traditional Negroni cocktail count as well. See below for a list of participating bars and their websites when available. And check imbibemagazine.com/NegroniWeek, facebook.com/events/492844314178572, or negroniweek.com for more information regarding the cause.
