As last week’s Metro Times story critical of management at Union Friendly Computers was hitting the street, employees at the Madison Heights company were getting bad news of their own: furloughs.

Employees say about 90 percent of the production staff — 30 or so people — was sent home for a minimum of three weeks. Calls informing them they could return to work won’t come until Jan. 2. In other words, have one hell of an unmerry Christmas. No employees would speak for attribution, saying they feared retribution. Tom Wright, president of the Communications Workers of America local, which represents company workers, declined to comment. Frank Scarmuzzino, president of Union Friendly, was also silent. It’s a tight-lipped bunch over there at good ’ol Union Friendly.

News Hits was unable to confirm reports that Scarmuzzino has been receiving chain-rattling visits from an old geezer named Marley and a few of his pale pals.
