Do you have an old bicycle that's been sitting in your garage that could use a little extra love? If so, it might be worth considering donating your gently used bike to help benefit Detroit kids.
This year, Farmington Hills-based men's clothing store The Shirt Box is teaming up with Back Alley Bikes for its third annual bike drive to help get gently used cycles into the hands of Detroit kids who need them. In the past two years, The Shirt Box has collected nearly 400 bikes to donate to Back Alley Bikes, the non-profit bike organization most well known for its brick and mortar community bike shop, The Hub near the intersection of Brainard St. and Cass Ave.
For The Shirt Box, founder and co-owner Ron Elkus, his childhood memories with bicycles were a driving factor in partnering with Back Alley Bikes.
“We started brainstorming about how great it was riding bikes when we were young,” Elkus says in a statement. “It provided us with a sense of freedom and pride as to how we would customize our bikes.”
Elkus hopes to extend that freedom and pride to Detroit area kids who might otherwise not have access to cycling.
The bike drive is going on now and will continue through Oct. 20. If you have a gently used working bicycle that you would like to donate, you can drop it off during business hours at The Shirt Box, located at 32500 Northwestern Hwy. in Farmington Hills.
