As we announced earlier this summer in our Side Dish column, Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan teamed up with the Charter One Foundation for this year’s annual Hunger-Free Summer campaign. The goal? To provide 2 million meals to needy children in southeastern Michigan.
They’re well past halfway to their goal. As of last week, they’d provided almost 1.5 million meals to hungry children this summer.
If you care about hungry children in our region, your dollar goes a long way with this campaign, with more than a dozen corporate and community organizations matching private donations. Every $1 donated will provide six meals to hungry kids, with mobile lunch delivery routes and fixed breakfast sites delivering nutritious meals directly to the children who need it.
Donations to the program can still be made through Sept. 1. You can see www.hungerfreesummer.org, call 855-315- 3663, text “EAT” to 85944 (a $10 donation will be added to donor’s cell phone bill plus applicable message or data rates), or by good old postal mail at: Gleaners, 2131 Beaufait St., Detroit, MI 48207
