Surreal is the only way to describe what occurs when two completely divergent worlds collide. This was the feeling when watching an episode of that venerable TV quiz show "Jeopardy!" a couple weeks back. Among the usual questions … er, answers about Henry IV, septagons and the Danube, was approximately the following: "The Motor City Brewing Company, located in this city, has a beer and a CD named Ghettoblaster, which is also a type of stereo." By answering this stumper, one able contestant earned $200, and at the same time our Detroit-based brewery earned a certain mark of distinction. So, is being name-checked on "Jeopardy!" the new status symbol for having made it in our culture? Motor City Brewing Company’s John Linardos had this response: "It’s wild. Who the fuck submitted that?" Which probably means it’s unsafe to assume that just because you’re struggling in seeming obscurity, no one will take notice. Perhaps Linardos could now add a small seal to his labels — "As Seen on Jeopardy!" — or a new "Jeopardy!" Pale Ale. This development also means that if you haven’t tried the Motor City Brewing Company’s fine assortment of beers, you’ll be compelled to do so the next time you’re on the town. And, in the next few months, keep an eye out for their expanded Tap Room (located across from the Traffic Jam & Snug at 470 W. Canfield, Detroit) which will be another welcome addition to the Cass Corridor scene. As seen on "Jeopardy!" (Oh, by the way, the correct answer: "What is Detroit?")
