In 2000, Detroit reported 732 AIDS/HIV cases per 100,000 people; nearly five times the statewide rate and 10 times the rate of the rest of Wayne County.

With Detroit contributing about half the state’s total caseload, Michigan ranked 17th in the nation with 15,500 AIDS/HIV cases, according to AIDS Partnership Michigan. And things aren’t getting any better, with the number of cases steadily increasing.

To help, the partnership is hosting AIDS Walk Michigan Detroit on Belle Isle Sat., Sept. 28. Registration begins at 10 a.m.; the 5K walk starts at noon, rain or shine. Proceeds from the walk will help fund 25 local AIDS service organizations. Call 313-446-9809 for more details.
