Detroit experienced a record number of Airbnb rentals over Memorial Day weekend — a figure the company is attributing to the ravers attending Movement Music Festival from out of town.
According to a statement from the company, Detroit hosted a record 1,700 Airbnb guests over the weekend — the biggest influx of Motor City guests in the company's 10 years. Detroit Airbnb hosts earned a combined $283,000 over the weekend, with the typical host pocketing $443, according to the press release.
"Home sharing helps Detroit substantially expand lodging capacity and take full economic advantage of huge events like Movement," Airbnb Midwest Policy Director Will Burns says in a statement. "Our host community stepped up in a big way to serve as ambassadors for their city this past weekend."
And it wasn't just Airbnbs that enjoyed a Movement bump, according to the release. "The increase in visitation also increased weekend occupancy of local hotels by more than 10 percent, which is quite remarkable for a holiday weekend," says Michael O’Callaghan, Executive Vice President and COO of the Detroit Metro Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. "The Movement weekend is an example of another successful music event taking place in Detroit and fulfilling the dream of making Detroit the summer outdoor music festival capital of the region."
Festival producers Paxahau say an estimated 25,000 people attended each day of the three-day festival.
