The Suburban Mobility Authority for Regional Transportation on Thursday unveiled a new smartphone app that allows riders to track buses in real-time.

The app, called RideSMARTBus, features routes, schedules, service alerts, and a tracking system, according to a news release.

“SMART is always looking for ways to improve service for our riders and the communities we serve,” said John C. Hertel, SMART general manager, in a statement. “By using technology we help our riders get the information they need when they need it and help to reduce the wait time at their stop. We believe the app helps our riders and we hope it encourages others who may not have used SMART in the past, to give us a try.”

The tracking system was launched last fall, SMART says. It stores a rider's last trip, allows riders to watch a bus travel along a route, and provides an arrival time.

"This gives the riders a sense of comfort in knowing exactly where the bus is located," SMART said in the release.

The app, available for download now in the Apple or Google Play store, also provides alternative routes with easy access to the bus system's Trip Planner for optimal routes.
