The holiday season brings parties, religious observances and shopping frenzies, but one annual event combines all three traditions with a more sobering cause. Thursday marks the 61st anniversary of the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights, a cause being pursued in many parts of the world.

The venerable Michigan Coalition for Human Rights is hosting an evening event at the Hope United Methodist Church, 26275 Northwestern Hwy., Southfield. For gifts, visit the Human Rights and Fair Trade Fair that opens at 6:30 p.m. For inspiration, attend the 7:30 p.m. talk "Human Rights at Home and Abroad: A 30-Year Retrospective on Contesting U.S.-Sponsored Wars and Militarism," by Francis Shor, a Wayne State University professor of history and author of the forthcoming book, Dying Empire: U.S. Imperialism and Global Resistance.

Peace.
