Casey Kasem, beloved radio broadcaster and a Detroit native, died at 3:32 a.m. on the morning of Sunday, June 15. He was 82. No cause of death has so far been made public, but he was surrounded by his family at St. Anthony's Hospital at Gig Harbor, Wash.
Tragically, Kasem's last few weeks with us were spent in the middle of a bitter feud over his care between his second wife, Jean, and his adult children from his first marriage.
Kasem was born Kemal Amin Kasem in Detroit in 1932 to Lebanese Druse parents, and he started his professional radio career at the local WJBK station in the mid 1950s. In 1970, he co-founded the American Top 40 franchise, and he hosted it, off and on, for 34 years.
His last radio show broadcast was made five years ago.
To many, he will always be Scooby Doo's stoner friend Shaggy, or perhaps Robin in Super Friends. He also voiced a number of characters on the original Transformers cartoon series, but left because he felt that the portrayals of Middle Eastern people and countries on the show was offensive. He also worked on Battle of the Planets.
