Taxman cometh — The group’s name may not sound sexy, but the Accounting Aid Society helps thousands of senior citizens and low-income families in metro Detroit keep their money in the community. The society helped nearly 7,000 people complete federal and state tax returns last year, with the average family receiving returns of $849. The group is now looking for volunteers to help prepare tax returns. No accounting background is required, but you will have to attend a training course or two. Eat like a King — The Interfaith Center for Racial Justice, a coalition of religious and civic leaders based in Macomb County, is holding its annual benefit dinner commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. on Monday, Jan. 16, in Sterling Heights. There’ll be speeches, musical performance and dinner — and, yes, vegetarians will be provided for. Cost is $25. The event, being held at the Best Western Sterling Inn, 34911 Van Dyke, Sterling Heights, begins at 6 p.m. Proceeds benefit the center’s activities, including “Listen, Learn, Live,” its interfaith and interracial dialogue program. Bellow against Bush — Those good radicals at World Can’t Wait are staging protests “in large cities and small towns all across the country” when President George W. Bush delivers his State of the Union address at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 31. The intent, organizers say, is to produce a “cacophony of sound” that will “drown out his address with music: from drums to violins, from hip hop and classical; and with noise: banging pots and ringing church bells, sound car horns and lifting our voices.” Locally, the plan is to have protesters gather at the intersection of Fourth and Main streets in Royal Oak.
