Store lore — If you’re looking to stock up on building and home improvement materials at a reasonable price, Habitat for Humanity can help. The group celebrated the grand opening of ReStore, its retail outlet for new and used building supplies, this week. ReStore will be offering discounts of 10 to 50 percent off selected items through Saturday. All proceeds from the store go directly to Habitat’s local building program, but that’s not the only advantage to patronizing ReStore. Homeowners can obtain reasonably priced tools to keep up their dwellings, and older tools are recycled and put back into use rather than being thrown away. The store is located at 37829 Groesbeck Hwy. in Clinton Township, and is open Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. and Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 568-263-1540 for info.
Honor bound — Excuse the quasi self-promotion, but Proactive is compelled to tell you about an event that will honor Metro Times stalwart Jack Lessenberry. OK, it’s not all about our cantankerous columnist. Lessenberry will be among six people feted when Detroit Central United Methodist church holds its first-ever Peace & Justice Awards Banquet on Sunday, Dec. 4, at the Detroit Yacht Club. Joining Jack as honorees are the venerable Grace Lee Boggs and City Council President Maryann Mahaffey. Dr. Felix Rogers and the Rev. Charles Adams, as well as Juliet Amene, who’ll receive the “youth award,” will also be taking much-deserved bows. Keynote speaker will be noted author Michael Eric Dyson, a professor of African-American studies at the University of Pennsylvania and a former Detroiter. Tickets are $100.
