Policing the police — A conference titled “Reshaping Community: Ending 50+ Years of Police Brutality” will open with an awards dinner at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, and continue with a full slate of workshops and presentations beginning at 9 a.m. the following day. The event is sponsored by the Detroit Coalition Against Police Brutality, the National Lawyers Guild and the Michigan Emergency Committee Against War & Injustice. Save our cities — The National Conference to Reclaim Our Cities will meet Friday, Nov. 11, through Sunday, Nov. 13, at Wayne State University’s Student Center Ballroom. The public is invited to attend the conference, which will feature delegations from across the country. The theme of the event is “Money to Rebuild New Orleans and All U.S. Cities, Not for War.” Workshops and sessions will discuss the crises occurring in cities across the country. Bag it — Writing for the Los Angeles Times, reviewer Kenneth Turan described Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price as “an engrossing, muckraking documentary about the retail giant that’s been called ‘the world’s largest, richest and probably meanest corporation.’” Peace, labor, church and student groups throughout the metro area will host screenings of the film beginning Sunday, Nov. 13.
