Mental health — On Wednesday, Oct. 26, The Guidance Center of Southgate will host an informative open house for adults living with mental illness and their loved ones. The event’s purpose is twofold: to initiate a campaign to challenge the stigma associated with adults living with mental illness and to celebrate and encourage consumer involvement and mutual support. The free event is open to the public. Mentally ill adults, their families and friends are encouraged to attend.

Attendees can expect brief presentations from representatives from the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, Schizophrenics Anonymous, the Depressive Bipolar Support Alliance and Emotions Anonymous. Participants will be invited to mingle and share information and ideas and offer mutual support. Refreshments will be served.

The free event is 7-9 p.m. at The Guidance Center, 13101 Allen Rd., Southgate. Call 734-785-7705, ext. 7170 for more information.

Thought for food — Here’s your chance to help a worthy cause and get some great photos at the same time. The Capuchin Soup Kitchen on Detroit’s East Side is hosting its annual Visions of the Sacred photography exhibit and auction. The event features limited edition prints from “many of the world’s leading photojournalists,” including the work of two Pulitzer Prize winners and 10 photographers of the year. The photos will be on exhibit Oct. 30 through Nov. 20 at the Capuchin Solanus Center, 1820 Mt. Elliott. Capuchin friars and volunteers distribute 3.5 million pounds of food annually to area families.
