If you’d like to bone up on your knowledge about the political situation in Venezuela, Oct. 2 might be a good time to do it. University of Detroit Mercy is hosting “Reform and Revolution in Venezuela: A report and discussion of the 16th World Festival of Youth and Students.” The festival was held Aug. 8-15 in Caracas. All speakers at the event attended the festival, which is co-sponsored by the U.S. Peace Council — Michigan Chapter and the Carney Latin American Solidarity Archives. The discussion starts at 2 p.m. and will be held in Life Science Room 113, at McNichols and Livernois. Participants are advised to use the McNichols entrance. HURRICANE HELP
If you’re looking for ways to help out victims of Hurricane Katrina, and maybe have a laugh while you do it, this may be the event for you: Comedy clubs across the United States and Canada will be holding fund-raisers to benefit those affected by the storm on Wednesday Sept. 28. A local benefit will be held at Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle in Royal Oak with house improvisational comedy troupe Totally Unrehearsed Theatre and comics Jeff Dwoskin, Mike Green and Melvin Bender performing. Before the show, there will be a silent auction featuring donations from local businesses. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. for the auction, and the show starts at 8 p.m. The cover charge is $10, with all proceeds going to the hurricane’s victims. Mark Ridley’s Comedy Castle is located 269 E.
