Serious play time — Want to experience some interesting theater and help a good cause at the same time? If so, you’re in luck. A new theater company in the metro area, Who Wants Cake?, will be staging a production of the The Normal Heart. Written by Larry Kramer, the play, according to the press release Proactive received, offers a “blistering account of this country’s apathetic response” to the AIDS crisis that struck in the early 1980s. It is also a “resounding call for compassion and social interaction.”
Sounds good to us.
The play will run from Wednesday, June 22, through Friday, June 24, at the First United Methodist Church, 22331 Woodward Ave., Ferndale. Activate — Think of it as a twofer. First you get to join in the 90th birthday celebration of Detroit activist Grace Lee Boggs, a person Proactive believes to be one of the more remarkable people on our planet. And then catch the premiere of a video featuring the late, great actor and social activist Ossie Davis. What’s that? You say you want more? OK, then. There will also be much great music. And, we’re certain, many, many cool and committed people. The event begins at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 25, in the IBEW Hall, 1358 Abbott, in Detroit.
