Bridging the gap — The Michigan Department of Transportation will hold four public hearings the last week in June regarding proposed locations for a new bridge or tunnel to cross the Detroit River. The meetings will allow the public to obtain info about the proposed crossings, and to provide comments on the various plans being considered. Photographs, maps and other reference materials will be available for review.

Hearings will be held from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

June 27: Martin Luther King Jr. High School, 3200 E. Lafayette, Detroit.

June 28: Southwestern High School, 6921 Fort St., Detroit.

June 29: River Rouge High School, 1460 Coolidge Hwy., River Rouge.

June 30: Crystal Gardens, 16703 Fort St., Southgate.

All aboard — A trio of groups wants you to take a train ride as a show of support for full federal funding of AMTRAK. The Sierra Club, Transportation Riders United and the Michigan Association of Railroad Passengers are involved in the event taking place Saturday, June 25. That’s when there will be a daylong choo-choo excursion that begins in Pontiac. Following a 10 a.m. press conference and rally, riders will board the 11:05 for Kalamazoo. There will be stops in Detroit, Dearborn and Ann Arbor for those who don’t want to make the whole trip. Special discounted tickets are available.
