Hamtown HEAT— In the environmental movement, the victories can seem few and far between. So winning one is cause to celebrate — which is exactly what’s happening beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, April 22, at the People’s Community Services Building, 8626 Joseph Campau, Hamtramck. Why? Because, after a mighty long struggle, it looks as if the city’s medical waste incinerator is finally history. The Hamtramck Environmental Action Team (HEAT) is throwing the party. There will be food, fun and music. Call 313-871-9002 or 313-244-3652.

Working against War — The Detroit Labor Committee for Peace and Justice will hold a forum, Labor Against the War, on Saturday, April 30, at UAW Local 22 Hall, 4300 Michigan Ave., Detroit. The program begins at 1 p.m. As the flier states, “Union members and our children are needlessly risking their lives in Iraq. While billions are spent on this war (enriching corporations like Halliburton), the needs of working people and our communities go unmet.” Along with a host of speakers, singer-songwriter Chris Buhalis will perform.

Burb bliss — The Michigan Suburbs Alliance will hold its annual meeting, 8:30 a.m.-noon, Friday, May 6, in the meeting room of the Southfield Public Library. The group is a voice for regionalism, and it’s growing louder. Speakers include Maxine Berman (Gov. Jennifer Granholm’s director of special projects) and Taylor Mayor Greg Pitoniak, who will talk about the state of our region. There’s a $15 registration fee, which includes a yummy continental breakfast. RSVP requested. Visit michigansuburbsalliance.org to download forms.
