FUNK THE VOTE Hoping to get voters ages 18 and 35 to discuss politics beyond the upcoming presidential election, a nonprofit hip-hop and arts organization called Project A.R.T. and the Wayne State Student Council are teaming up to put on “Amp’D2VOTE” at 7 p.m. on election night.
The free concert features Detroit native and funkster Amp Fiddler, who also sits on Project A.R.T.’s board of directors. Fiddler’s album Waltz of a Ghetto Fly, released earlier this year, was a smash overseas, and he has toured or recorded with artists such as Prince, Maxwell and D-12.
Anton Reed, Project A.R.T.’s program director, says the issues they hope to keep alive include juvenile delinquency, and the next elections for governor and mayor. As for the 18 to 35 age bracket, he calls the group a “sleeping giant” that has the power to affect the outcome of local and national elections.
