Last week this column reported that supporters of the initiative had apparently qualified it for the ballot. Not so, says Saginaw attorney Greg Schmid, who is the main man behind the measure.

"The unfounded rumors that we have the signatures we need are one of the main factors that cripple us and which we try to overcome each week," wrote Schmid in an e-mail. "Every time a person hears we have made it on the ballot they stop petitioning and don’t start again till I tell them we do not have enough. They don’t believe me when I say they need to keep going ... but they will believe it on July 10 when we don’t have enough petitions to file with the state because of people spreading rumors and being so concerned with keeping score that they don’t keep their head in the game.

"We will make it if everyone goes out petitioning several more times and right up to the July 10 deadline," adds Schmid. "We need people all over the state at 4th of July celebrations! If we have a few off days we will not make the ballot. I am very serious about the jeopardy we are in with everyone announcing our success! Our chickens are not hatched!"
