News Hits likes the riverfront promenade behind the RenCen a lot. It is a terrific addition to the city, with a cool fountain and a wonderfully laid-back atmosphere. We were enjoying a sparkling day there recently when we noticed a number of “don’ts” mounted on the side of a trash container. So even the illiterate get the message, the no-no’s are posted as pictographs — figures shown doing something verboten overlaid with a bisected red circle. There were a dozen forbidden activities — no littering, of course, and no biking, boozing or fishing. What caught our attention though was the gun.
What, no shooting people?
Our first thought was, “Only in Detroit.” But then we realized that, as far as we know anyway, no one has been shot while promenading riverside. So, maybe the sign works. In which case we recommend such signs be posted throughout the city. It could be a cost-effective way to deal with all the police officers that will be lost to budget cuts.
