This former auto parts dealership at 7637 Oakland, a few blocks north of East Grand Boulevard, may no longer be doing business in the traditional sense, but, for some consumers, it still offers an outstanding selection of slightly used electrical, plumbing and general home improvement supplies. And you can’t beat the prices.

“They started pilfering bricks from that building last summer,” says Marvelous Persell, owner of the Apex Bar next door.

Persell says she called the city’s Building & Safety Engineering Department in late January when looters weakened the structure so much that a wall fell onto her property. So far, the only response has been the installation of yellow “caution” tape around the collapsing building.

City officials at Building & Safety Engineering tell the Abandoned Structure Squad (aka A.S.S.) that 7637 Oakland has been placed on the emergency demolition list. They could not say when (or if) the building has actually been scheduled for demolition.
