The Women's Survival Center of Oakland County -- which helps women and families deal with poverty, divorce and abuse --has moved to a new location in Pontiac.
After 16 years, the center left the former All Saints Episcopal Church rectory on West Pike Street and reopened Nov. 10 on the second floor of the Great Lakes Bancorp Building, 761 W. Huron St.
WSC Executive Director Gloria Danna says that in March, the church asked WSC to leave its rent-free space at the former rectory so that the church could expand.
"It's an excellent fit," WSC Executive Director Gloria Danna says, adding that the new space is handicapped accessible and big enough to house most of the center's main office programs. "It puts a lot of our clients at ease. A lot of women were afraid we were going to close. When their lives are already uncertain, we don't want to add to that."
Danna says the center received help from local property owner Jim Cunningham, who arranged to reduce the center's rent for the entire 3,600-square-foot second floor of the West Huron Street building from the $36,000 asking price to $30,000 annually.
Danna says the center will remain in its new location for up to three years while money is raised to buy or build a permanent home for WSC in the area.
