How many benefits can we open our hearts to? There’s always room for one more at compassion’s table. And catastrophes don’t make other concerns go away.
This Sunday, Oct. 14, a jazz and poetry benefit at the Firefly Club calls attention to the need for more research into ovarian cancer. Headliners for the program of lyrics and improvisation include Princeton poet Judy Michaels, Detroit poet Terry Blackhawk and jazz pianist Ellen Rowe of the University of Michigan School of Music. Joining them from 3 to 6 p.m. will be vocalists Susan Chastaigne and Sonny Wilkinson, as well as clarinetist Deborah Chodnacki, among others. Admission is $10, with proceeds going to Gilda’s Club, the nonprofit organization named after late comedian and former Detroiter Gilda Radner (pictured) who died of ovarian cancer at the age of 43 in 1989.
