MT's Michael Jackman will guest on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday

MT managing editor Michael Jackman will join NPR Weekend Edition host Scott Simon in a discussion about the problems with lazy phrases like "putting Detroit on the map," "a blank slate," and colonial metaphors in regard to media coverage of Detroit. The episode will air between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. on NPR this Saturday, Oct. 18. Check back here for more specific details as they become available. 

While well-intentioned, rhetorical devices like "putting Detroit on the map" are clichés and, at worst, alienate and belittle longtime Detroiters. According to Jackman, Simon teased our resident firebrand a bit for being so defensive about the way Detroit is covered by journalists. "It was a fun chat," Jackman says.

Jackman's angry rants are award-winning — he snagged first place in this year's Michigan Press Association's contest for Editorial Writing. Of his work, the judges wrote, "Provocative introductory paragraphs led to very entertaining, and informative, content. Very well done." (He trounced the only competition, Downriver's News-Herald.)

It's Jackman's first national radio appearance. "I hope I did Detroit proud," he says from his desk next to mine.
