Millions of Brazilians Brazilians formed a year and a half ago when, as a joke, three Taylor buds decided to start a stoner rock band. From such ridiculous beginnings, the trio morphed into a high-energy punk-dance onslaught and emerged last year as one Detroit's best new bands.
They're still kind of ridiculous, though.
Why? Well, there are elements of pandemonium at any MoB show: In fact, singer-guitarist Nick Cicchetti nearly fell to his death after climbing where he shouldn't have during shows at the Works and the New Dodge.
And good-natured insanity frequently follows Cicchetti and drummer Christopher "Zoz" Gruse back to their Woodbridge crib.
(More than a few weekend-long afterparties have gone down there). And in the midst of shooting this column, Millions of Brazilians did destroy guitarist Derek Dorey's only guitar! That says a lot, doesn't it.
But before you write 'em off as a bunch of goofballs (which you might after watching Nick's drum-instructing alter-ego "Tits Dungbelly" on YouTube), MoB's new EP Half Horse/Half Horse is a tight amalgamation of classic old Touch and Go hardcore and contemporary DFA-type dance groove. Imagine a more dance-friendly Terrible Twos and you'll get an idea of what grounds they're stompin'.
Still, the band's all about throwing down back at home. Says Nick, "On the weekends, there are people in and out all the time. It's usually a nonstop dance party till 6 or 7 in the morning." Just watch out for that guitar.
