Sometimes Tim Monger of Great Lakes Myth Society gets home late from a gig. But sometimes his girlfriend Kristie Brablec gets home later — after landing her father’s 1969 Piper Cherokee in their back yard after a quick flight to Ohio.
Tim and Kristie’s “back yard” is Kristie’s family farm in Britton, 20 miles south of — and a world away from — Ann Arbor. The farm has been in the family since the 1920’s. Right now Kristie's father rents out the fields, where soybeans grow.
Smack in the middle of the soybeans is a landing strip and hangar built by Krisitie’s father Barry, formerly a pilot for Northwest Airlines. He flew everything from workhorse twin-propeller DC-3s to behemoth 747s. Now retired, he’s helping Kristie get her private pilot’s license, which she should have in about a month.
For Kristie, nothing beats hopping in a plane after coming home from work. “I come home, walk out the door, and fly!”
Tim joined Kristie in Britton last year. Almost halfway between Dundee and Tecumseh, Britton is one of those one-stop-light towns — except there isn’t even a stop light, just antique stores, a lot of peace and quiet, and an occasional train passing through the flat expanses of Lenawee County. Given the Myth Society’s love for fading Michigania, it’s an apt setting for Tim.
“I love going to antique stores, I love walking through 300 feet of wet grass to get to my car. Everything out here is more intense.”
