More Michigan children are living in poverty compared to 9 years ago

A recent study done by the Michigan League for Public Policy shows that the child poverty rate has increased by 15 percent since 2008.

In 2008, there were 455,357 children living in poverty in Michigan. In 2015, that number increased to 481,421.

As far as overall well-being of kids by county, Ottawa, Clinton, and Oakland counties all scored high. Counties like Iosco, Oceana, and Oscada have some of the highest rates of child poverty in the state and come in on the low end of overall well-being for a child.

While all of this seems pretty grim, there have been strides made in some other areas to reduce the amount of children living in poverty. In Detroit, the rate of children in poverty decreased from 2008-2015. A 24 percent drop is a step in the right direction for the city of Detroit.
