While cruising the Web on Monday, we caught sight of a photo featuring a long line of Europeans pointing their bare backsides in the direction of George W. Bush’s hotel window during his stay in Sweden. As protests go, it was a beautiful statement: simple, direct and unambiguous.

The question now on our minds here at News Hits is whether the leader of the free world will find another full mooning awaiting him when he pays a call next week to Motown, a city where 90 percent of the voters favored the Bushman’s opponent last November.

Shrub will be in town to address the U.S. Conference of Mayors, which this year is holding its annual meeting in our fair city. Bush is scheduled to speak Monday, June 25, around 12:15 p.m. at the Renaissance Center.

Although we can’t guarantee Detroiters will be as expressive as their European counterparts, there definitely will be a protest of some sort. According to the group Coalition for a People’s Congress, demonstrators will begin assembling outside the RenCen at 9 a.m. Also planned is a counter-conference to be held Saturday, June 23, at Christ Church, 960 E. Jefferson. That event, according to organizers, will include “testimonials from various community groups and individuals about the decimation of our cities by corporations, cops and the Pentagon.” Registration beings at 9 a.m. For more information, phone 313-831-0750.
