Michiganders will have soon have a chance to see the state's Democrat candidates for governor go toe-to-toe in a series of online and televised debates.
The debates will feature former state Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer, businessman Shri Thanedar, and former Detroit health director Abdul El-Sayed.
The first debate is coming up on May 31 at the Mackinac Policy Conference, and will feature the top three primary candidates from both political parties. That will be streamed live on the Detroit Regional Chamber's website and aired on Detroit Public Television (DPTV) and other public TV stations around the state at 8 p.m.
The candidates will also face off in two debates coordinated by the Michigan Democratic Party. On June 20, they'll be on the west side of the state at WOOD-TV in Grand Rapids, and on July 19 they'll be at WDIV-TV in Detroit. Both debates will be televised live and streamed online.
As the Aug. 7 primary approaches, we've been rolling out profiles on each of the candidates. So far, we have covered progressives Thanedar and El-Sayed. Whitmer is next to come.
If you consider yourself a Republican, your people began their gubernatorial debate schedule early this month. Highlights from the first installment of the Tax Cut Show included candidate Sen. Patrick Colbeck claiming that El-Sayed is a terrorist. The old boys meet again to argue about how to best shaft the poor in Mackinac next week, and then in Detroit on June 28 at WDIV-TV.
