A Melvindale 15-year-old has been charged with making a terrorist threat or false report of terrorism after telling a classmate via Snapchat that he planned to "shoot up the school" and including a photo of a someone holding a gun.

The Wayne County Prosecutor's office says the student who received the messages reported the communications to school officials, who in turn called the Melvindale Police Department.

The situation follows a number of reported threats at Michigan high schools since a south Florida high school student opened fire on his classmates last week, killing 17 people. According to WDIV-TV, a student at South Lyon High School was charged Tuesday with making a false report or threat of terrorism after telling a schoolmate he wanted to re-enact the shooting in Florida, also via Snapchat. On Monday, the station reports that Manistee County deputies learned of a threat to “shoot up” a high school there. Police said an AR-15 was taken from the boy’s home.

In the Clio Area School District, near Flint, WDIV reports that parents were notified about a student who made a threat. The student was arrested and it's unclear if he has been charged.

The Otsego Public School District was closed today, after a student in that district made a violent threat, according to MLive. The news outlet reports there was also a threat made at nearby Plainwell Community Schools, though those stayed open.
