The man, apparently, told officials he was attempting to walk across the icy lake from Detroit to Toronto.
Around 9:30 a.m., officials aboard Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay, an ice-breaking tug located about a mile and a half mile away from Seaway Island, spotted a figure out on the lake and deployed on foot to offer assistance.
The man, who was not dressed for the weather and was not carrying any flotation devices or form of communication, was treated for symptoms of hypothermia and taken aboard the Neah Bay. The man was then taken to the municipal pier in Algonac, where he was transferred into the care of medical personnel.
"Most of us joined the Coast Guard to protect life," Lt. Joshua Zike told WKYC. "Our primary mission during the winter months is breaking ice to keep commercial traffic moving, but preserving life will always come first."
