News Hits is not big on promoting products, but we do make exceptions — particularly when it’s a harmless substance under attack by the Drug Enforcement Administration.
We’re talking about things made from hemp oil. Never mind that the marijuana relative doesn’t contain enough psychoactive chemicals to get a pissant high. Just the fact that the two are in the same plant family is enough to get the feds fired up.
Last November the DEA proposed regulations that, if approved, would make it illegal to manufacture and sell hemp skin-care, cosmetics and food products.
The DEA told News Hits that it is reviewing the rules and will publish them in the federal register for public comment. A final ruling will be made after that, says Susan Feld, DEA Detroit office spokesperson. Feld would not comment on the rules and says their publication date is not yet scheduled.
New Hits wonders what the hell they’re smoking over at the DEA. After all, hemp contains less than 1 percent THC, the ingredient needed to set bong-heads soaring; marijuana has up to 14 percent THC.
“You would have to smoke a joint the size of a telephone pole to get high off hemp,” says Amy Kirschner, assistant manager for The Body Shop at The Somerset Collection in Troy.
The Body Shop, which generated about $5 million in sales nationwide last year on its hemp lip-care line, will circulate petitions until July 9, urging the DEA to not ban the products.
