I was just talking about his work over the weekend — mainly regarding his recent solo show at a gallery in the Cass Corridor — to an artist friend who hadn't yet seen Tai's work.
Said friend loved what he saw on when I pulled up Tai's work on my Droid, and was bummed when I told him he'd just missed a killer, solo exhibition. Then we started talking about Mad Men and ordered chips and salsa.
As an artist and as an art educator, Tai's work (painting and sculture) is certainly imaginative, but it's also evocatively innovative, in that a single piece claims many moods. They are beautiful universes you can move into and around for the duration of your gaze.
I last wrote about Tai in 2009, when he was one of 18 Detroit artists to receive the noble Kresge Arts in Detroit Fellowship.
This post started out as an email to that firend of mind. But then I'd thought I share. See, it was announced yesterday that Tai's flat-out awesome solo show, Accepting Accidents, at the increasingly necessary Re:View Gallery, was extended this week.
Serendipitous, I know.
So, if this buddy of mine had yet to check out Tai, I can only imagine he's not alone. Dig this show, people.
The closing reception for Accepting Accidents is Thursday, October 21, from 5 to 9 p.m.
And let's raise this glass and inch higher: Tai announced, via his blog, last Wednesday, that he was offered to teach a course a the College for Creative Studies. Congrats, Cedric.
