Father Charles Morris got awfully cold last weekend — all to show the planet is getting warmer.
He took the "polar bear plunge" into Lake Erie in Monroe on Saturday as part of the International Day of Climate Action. During his splash, he noticed one of global warming's effects: lower lake levels.
"When I made my plunge, I had to go out 40 feet and it was still only thigh-high. Five years ago I would have only had to go half that distance. It made it a pain the neck for me," says Morris, also the founder of the Interfaith Power and Light Council, a multifaith effort to encourage from the pulpit better environmental conservation.
The "green" priest lives what he preaches. He has converted his St. Elizabeth parish in Wyandotte to a more environmentally friendly operation with solar and wind power, more efficient lighting and other improvements.
