Applicants Vie for $25k Award

The Kresge Foundation announced on Friday, Nov. 1, its intent to accept applications for 2014 Kresge Artist Fellowships in Dance/Music and Film/Theatre. Each fellowship provides $25,000 to awardees as well as professional practice opportunities by ArtServe Michigan.

Since 2009, Kresge Arts in Detroit, which administers the fellowships for its parent foundation, has awarded 90 fellowships, distributing $2.5 million, according to Kresge officials.

The fellowships award creative vision within a range of disciplines, including classically- and academically-trained artists, as well as self-taught artists. An independent panel of local and national artists, and arts professionals, selects the fellows.

In 2014, the program will provide support for nine Dance/Music Fellows and nine Film/Theatre Fellows — living and working in metropolitan Detroit (Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties). Artists in the following disciplines are eligible to apply for 2014 fellowships:

DANCE/MUSIC

  • Choreography
  • Dance
  • Music (composers and performers in all genres)
  • Sound art
  • Interdisciplinary work (including experimental work and other hybrid forms)

FILM/THEATRE

  • Directing (in film and theatre);
  • Screenwriting
  • Playwriting

“We’re thrilled to expand our support of the artist community in metropolitan Detroit by awarding directors and writers in Film/Theatre,” says Michelle Perron, director of Kresge Arts in Detroit. “There is incredible talent here that deserves the recognition.”

Applications are only available online and must be completed by Friday, Jan. 31, 2014 by 11:59 p.m., E.S.T.
