May Day is the International Workers' Day, a celebration of the working class. It started officially in 1891 after five years of build up that included protests, riots, and hangings, rooted in Chicago's Haymarket Square. Today, May Day is celebrated around the world---here in the USA, it's been relegated to "Labor Day" in September.

However, thanks to the long memories of workers in Detroit, it continues to be an important day, and thanks to the influx of Latin American and other immigrant laborers, the day again has seen a resurgence nationwide.

Occupy Detroit has put together a brief history of the holiday, along with a schedule of local events happening today that culminate in Grand Circus Park.
