What would the current crew of would-be Detroit HMFICs — that’s nostalgic Coleman Young-speak for Head Mother Fucker in Charge — do for the environment if elected?
The Sierra Club Mackinac Chapter and a half-dozen other green groups hope to find out at a “Detroit Mayoral Environmental Forum” on Thursday, Aug. 17, 7 p.m. at Cathedral Church of St. Paul, Barth Hall, 4800 Woodward. Detroit’s environment may seem a low priority considering that the city can’t keep all the streetlights on or pick up the bulk trash on time. But if you think about it, as Sierra Club political director Dan Farrough has, tending to the environment may help revitalize Detroit. Creating decent public transportation would cut down on pollution and sprawl, and give those without cars — about 30 percent of the city’s population — a way to get to work. Farrough and his green compatriots also plan to ask candidates about ways to improve air quality, redevelop brownfields and address environmental justice issues.
