In July, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer released her memoir True Gretch: What I’ve Learned About Life, Leadership, and Everything in Between, embracing a version of the nickname “Big Gretch” popularized by Detroit rapper GMac Cash.
Now, just a few months later, Big Gretch has announced an upcoming young adult adaptation of the book. The new edition, aimed at inspiring young leaders, will be published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers, an imprint of Simon & Schuster.
Whitmer shared exclusively with People that the young adult version, titled True Gretch — Young Adult Edition, is slated for release early next year.

“My goal with True Gretch—Young Adult Edition is to help readers find the good and use it to make a difference in their own lives,” she told People. “There’s no group for whom this is more true than our young people. Their new ideas, fresh perspectives and desire to make their communities even better is just what we need right now. I hope this guide helps them as they navigate all the challenges they face, both big and small, and ‘get stuff done.’”
The YA edition builds on the original memoir, offering new advice and personal stories for young readers. It includes a Q&A with Whitmer’s teenage daughters and resources on major issues like sexual assault and gun violence. Throughout, Whitmer offers practical lessons on leadership, resilience, and making a positive impact in the community.
Growing up, Whitmer’s grandmother taught her to find good in everyone, a lesson she carries as governor. This idea runs through the new book, paired with stories about her Midwest upbringing, political career, and facing challenges like the assassination plot she survived and high-profile bullies.
True Gretch—Young Adult Edition hits shelves on January 28, 2025.
