Feminist icon and famed journalist Gloria Steinem will be visiting Midtown on Wednesday, March 7, to offer some insight on the future of feminism in light of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements. Steinem's keynote speech is part of Wayne State's Forum on Contemporary Issues in Society's 10th anniversary lecture series entitled "What in the World is Going On?"
Steinem became a household name in the 1960s when she infiltrated the glitzy, glamorous world of the Playboy Club as an undercover Bunny and exposed the sexist and inhumane treatment of Bunnies — women who worked as waitresses in the club and were bound to "Bunny Manual" rules that included donning body-mutilating costumes and enduring incessant catcalls from patrons.
Since then, Steinem has marched and rallied all over to champion for women's rights and co-founded feminist publications and organizations like Ms. magazine and the National Women's Political Caucus.
Steinem's speech will be followed by a panel discussion featuring Lilia Cortina, a professor of psychology and women's studies from the University of Michigan; Georgia Chao, a professor of management from the University of Michigan; and Pamela Trotman Reid, a WSU senior scholar and University of Saint Joseph president emerita, will moderate the discussion.
The event will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the Community Arts Auditorium; 450 Reuther Mall, Detroit. Admission is free, but an RSVP is required.
