That cheering sound you heard last week came from gays and lesbians across Michigan. Seems the American Family Association, a conservative Christian outfit based in Mississippi, was backing anti-gay ballot proposals in Royal Oak, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Traverse City.

In all four cities, according to the Detroit-based Triangle Foundation, the ballot measures were an attempt to strip gays and lesbians of equal protection under the law by repealing current statutes and preventing future ones from being passed.

“They have failed to spread their campaign of bigotry and divisiveness in Michigan,” the Triangle Foundation’s Sean Kosofsky said about the “virulently anti-gay” AFA.

In Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo and Royal Oak, the anti-gay groups either couldn’t gather the required number of signatures or missed the filing deadline, according to the Triangle Foundation. In Traverse City, a judge upheld the city’s decision that petitions had been prepared and circulated in a way that violated state and local law.

Deciding to take a little break from our usual fornicating and blaspheming, News Hits paid a quick visit to the American Family Association Web site (www.afa.net). We’re happy to report that George W. Bush apparently no longer has God on his side.

According to an item posted on the site, Peter LaBarbera of Americans for Truth is not very comfortable with the manner in which the Republican National Convention addressed social issues. He is not alone in his feelings, especially where the homosexual agenda is concerned.

“Republicans who are concerned about sexual morality and traditional Biblical ethics on homosexuality are astounded that the Republican Party seems to be trying to play this moral issue down the middle,” LaBarbera says.
