Firefighters extinguish minor blaze at disused Pontiac Silverdome

A fire was reported at the Pontiac Silverdome Tuesday morning, occurring in the press box area, according to authorities. 

Crews from the Waterford Regional Fire Department received a call at 7:20 a.m. reporting a fire at the former home of the Detroit Lions, according to The Oakland Press. Firefighters entered the stadium to find a blaze in the press box area. 

The fire appears to have been burning through the night, and was discovered in the morning by security. 

We reached out to the Waterford Regional Fire Department for comment. According to the department, it was "a very small fire, rather insignificant actually." 

The Silverdome has been vacant since the Lions decamped to Ford Field in 2002, and it has continued to decline from there. Officially closing in 2007, the stadium has been through the wringer, with weather damage ripping the roof off, and any remaining assets being sold. It won the distinction of "Best Building To Tear Down" in our 2015 Best of Detroit issue, and still stands today before its planned demolition. 

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
