Neil Young sang, “The King is gone but he’s not forgotten.” I doubt Elvis Presley will ever be forgotten. The anniversary of Presley’s death (Aug. 16) is approaching, and those creepy folks who worship him (some without even a bit of irony) will invade Memphis and Graceland. Despite all those macabre festivities, there is some good news on the Elvis front. At the official Elvis Web site, www.elvis.com, read about the Elvis Presley Charitable Foundation’s recent construction of Presley Place, a 12-unit apartment complex for homeless people in Memphis. There is also an Elvis Presley Music Room for the youngsters to receive musical instruction. Lisa Marie Presley even showed at the grand opening ceremony; no word on whether “In the Ghetto” was playing in the background.
