Metalism for kids
Detroit club kids love getting beat on. At an after-party for Movement 2004, one of the bloodiest assaults came at the hands of Speedy J and Chris Liebing, mild-mannered cats from Holland and Germany, respectively. These two Euro sweethearts punched up a squiggly crowd of loonies at St. Andrew’s Hall with four hours of psychedelicized synth lines, punishing kick drums and distorted bass vibrations performed at 150 bpm (that’s beats per minute). It was hypnotic, dangerous fun meant to stand body hairs on end. And it did. Liebing calls this techno style Schranz,which sounds German but has no meaning in any language. Fucked-up is what it’s called in the motorized city.
Liebing and Speedy J’s new full-length, Metalism, is released Nov. 28 on Novamute. It’s brutal and beautiful, as fast as modern life can possibly get (see the song “Cream 3”), before it tires briefly, then lifts off again on “Eventide.” Weird titles like “Tunox” and “Acid Trezcore” contain hard-charging jams intended to seduce you, to draw you as close to the speakers as you can stand; and the 12-minute “Assault” sizzles and shimmers like a bullet train gliding through the countryside between Frankfurt and Rotterdam. If you crave more mayhem after that, then more mayhem is what will come. Nocturnal Sounds, a local promotions group that brought Bryan Zentz to town for Halloween (and has booked the equally lacerating Adam Beyer for Dec. 10), presents an expected wild night of drum ’n’ bass vs. electro. The program spotlights the Ann Arbor-based duo Soundmurderer (Tadd Mullinix and Todd Osborn) doing a live set; and Punisher and Kero also performing live. Featuring Justin Kruse, Darkcube, T. Trippin’ on tryptophan
The heat has been rising since mid-summer at the Hub, where Eddie “Flashin’” Fowlkes — another techno original from Belleville (where he skipped stones on the lake with Atkins, May and Saunderson) — has been slinging the old-school tech and nu wave house with special guests like Aaron-Carl and Delano Smith. The post-Thanksgiving event will also be a 20th reunion party for all you smarty-pants 1985 Cass Tech grads.
