Men's rights group A Voice for Men has chosen Detroit for their first international conference, to be held at The DoubleTree Hotel on 525 W. Lafayette Blvd. June 26 to 28. Declaring the city an "iconic testament for masculinity" on their website, the group believes that most of the nation is turning a blind eye to Detroit, just like what they call a "men's rights epidemic" goes ignored.
At least it might have been — until we last checked that 819 people from across the globe have signed an online petition on change.org demanding that the event be cancelled following last week's Santa Barbara shooting carried out by Elliot Rodger, who spoke heavily in his manifesto about his hatred of women. And on June 7th, a group will gather at Grand Circus Park and march to the DoubleTree Hotel to demand cancellation of the conference.
AVFM has stated on it's website that its unsupportive of violent attempts to garner men's rights, and claims it isn't women-hating, just feminist-hating (in fact, several of the speakers set to attend the conference are female). Commentators on the AVFM website have voiced in numerous articles that they're hopeful feminists — defined by Merriam-Webster as those who believe that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities — show up to further prove their point that opposing groups are man-hating. One article explicitly states that they hope to see anyone who has created a petition against the group in Detroit, saying "You will go down in history as no better than those who turned firehoses on peaceful civil rights activists."
